Biography Brief - Mamie Ethel Herron (September 30, 1900 - April 20, 1972)

PARENTS/SIBLINGS:  Mamie Ethel Herron was born on September 30, 1900, in Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama [1-3].  She was the oldest of the ten known children born to James Thomas Herron (May 21, 1879-July 28, 1966) and Mintie Ardiona Cheatham (July 1879-June 16, 1951) [4-36].   Her siblings included the following [4-36].

  1. Walter James Herron,  b.  September 10, 1902, Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  July 13, 1970, Merrillville, Lake County, Indiana, USA.
  2. Clarence Herron, b.  June 04, 1904, Pocahontas, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  April 20, 1986, Huntsville, Madison County, Alabama, USA.
  3. Flossie Herron, b.  February 12, 1906, Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  December 07, 1996, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, USA.
  4. Edgar Herron, b.  February 01, 1908, Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  June 07, 2005, Nauvoo, Walker County, Alabama, USA.
  5. Donnie Mae Herron, b.  August 04, 1910, Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  November 08, 1995, Las Vegas, Clark County, Nevada, USA.
  6. Grady Herron, b.  December 14, 1912, Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  August 19, 2008, Jasper, Walker County, Alabama, USA.
  7. Esther Louise Herron, b.  January 31, 1915, Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  November 13, 2003, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, USA.
  8. Earl Herron, b.  January 07, 1918, Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  January 26, 1977, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, USA.
  9. Ernest Herron, b.  August 17, 1920, Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama, USA; d.  April 18, 1971, Birmingham, Jefferson County, Alabama, USA.

MARRIAGE:  In December 1921, Mamie married Columbus Burleson "Burl" Garner.  Born  March 25, 1901, in Hamilton, Marion County, Alabama, Burl was the son of William Henry Garner and Rhoda Arminda Terry [37-58].  


CHILDREN:  The marriage of Mamie and Columbus produced a son, Columbus Earl Garner [59-64].  Sadly, his life ended the same day it began on November 11, 1922, in Carbon Hill, Walker County, Alabama [59-64].  


DEATH:  At seventy, on April 20, 1972, Mamie died in Jasper, Walker County, Alabama [1-3].  Thirteen years later, on August 11, 1985, Burl passed away in Jasper [37-40].  He was eighty-four [37].  Mamie and Burl's interments are in Scott Cemetery in Saragossa, Walker County, Alabama [1, 37].

So metimes, I question God's purposes and plans. However, they are something I have always believed in. Every week, as I am flipping through our television channels, inevitably flashed before me is a televangelist preaching from his camera-lit pulpit. For the most part, the thematic summation of the sermons is that if you pray hard enough, live totally without sin, and, of course, tithe, you will see the pearly gates of heaven. It usually emphasizes that if you follow those three simple instructions (especially to tithe), you will be rewarded with peace and prosperity here on Earth. Of course, their belief system is hugely flawed. Skimmed over are the verses within the white pages of the Bible that express that none of us are without sin and that only God's child, Jesus, is perfect and flawless. They ignore the stories within the Bible foretelling the trials and tribulations endured by God's apostles and others merely to fulfill God's purpose, God's plan. In
